Central Truth
This was the first church business meeting. The eleven disciples had grown to 120. The main order of business was to appoint a new apostle to replace Judas Iscariot. The Disciples prayed, “Lord, show us whom you have chosen.” The lots they cast fell to Mathias.
Reflections
When we face a difficult task, an important decision, or a baffling dilemma, we need to remind ourselves of the truth of God’s word in this passage. We shouldn’t rush into things and just hope they come out the way they should. Instead, our first step should be to pray for the Holy Spirit’s power and guidance.
Not only should we seek the Holy Spirit’s power and guidance for the bigger things, but in all things. The Holy Spirit is a person. We can talk to Him and He will guide us into “ALL” truth (John 16:13). So we can be confident if we seek Him first and pray. We will receive the answer we need.
Discussion Questions
- Do you seek God’s help only for the dilemmas in your life when they occur?
- Do you pray about day-to-day things? Why or why not?
- Do you make use of the four types of prayer (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication)?
- God knows our heart, but are we truthful and honest with Him in our prayers?

A good reminder to start this new year.Sort of makes one think of Proverbs 3:6.

Thanks for the reminder of our need to be prayerful in all things and to remember that God knows our hearts and desires to work through us even in business.

Thanks for the great reminder, Bill. I love the ACTS acrostic. It's a simple way to stay focused on God in times of prayer. And I appreciate that you walk the walk when it comes to prayer.
