READ THE PASSAGE
Central Truth
The truth is not always comfortable, and will not be quieted.
Reflections
In this passage, religious leaders are commanding Peter and John, "unschooled and ordinary men," not to speak or teach in the name of Jesus. They knew a man had been healed in the name of Jesus, yet wanted to hide this truth. For whatever reason, these leaders knew the truth and wanted to "put a lid" on it. Did it threaten them, make them uncomfortable, or cause them to question their beliefs? We don't know, but we need to ask ourselves the same question, "What do we do with the truth?"The primary issue here is "What have we done with Jesus?" He is the "Truth." (John 14:6) How have we responded to Him? Have we entered into a relationship with Him as our Lord and Savior? That is the most important decision we can make. To a non-Christian, this question could be very uncomfortable. Our very way of life may feel threatened. Admitting that we are sinners and that we need a Savior is a difficult thing to do, but no matter how we respond, it doesn't change the truth. The Bible promises us that "[A]t the name of Jesus every knee should bow . . . and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord ." (Philippians 2:10-11 NIV)
Even as a Christian, the truth can still be uncomfortable. I'd love to tell you that when I am confronted with sin in my life, I immediately confess it and move on. I'd love to tell you that, but it's not the truth. Instead, I try to deny it, ignore it, justify it, and even "put a lid" on it. But, admitting the truth about areas where I'm struggling is easier because of my Christian friends. They reflect God's love for me even in my struggles. Also, I've found that God's unconditional love comes alive in the Celebrate Recovery ministry.
This passage reminds me that the Truth is the truth no matter what we do with it, just like It--the Truth--was for the religious leaders in Jesus' day. Their trying to hide it failed completely. So will ours.
Discussion Questions
- Have you entered into a relationship with Jesus? If not, why are you waiting?
- What do you do when confronted with sin in your life?
- What scripture comforts you when you are struggling?
- Do you have Christian friends that reflect God's love for you, even when you mess up? If not, find some!

Awesome Terri! Loved it and challenged! Truth is our anchor and sets us free when we embrace it with belief and act on it. Your bio made me laugh too. I appreciate your sense of humor. Thanks for sharing.

Terri, Thanks for your bold declaration that Jesus is the truth. In a postmodern relativistic world, we constantly need to be reminded of that. Thanks for your insights; they encouraged me today. Rod
