Central Truth
God gives each of us certain strengths, skills, and abilities that allow us to function in His plan for our lives. God called the twelve to preach His word, not serve tables. It is important that each of us identify and use the strengths given to us by God.
Reflections
Verse 2 spoke to me. I can recall situations in my life where I have had to realize just what my strengths and obligations in a given situation are. I am sure all of us have had the feeling of running but really not moving or making progress. Perhaps in those situations we are not using our God given strengths or following His plan for our lives. Maybe we are too stubborn to use others. He puts us where our strengths are to be used.
Early in my professional career I was promoted to replace an Icon of industry upon his retirement. Over many years he had grown the position from its very inception. He knew every aspect of the business and needed very little help from subordinates to function as "the one who knows all of the answers." As you can imagine, in a very short time I found myself working long hours. I was not using my subordinates, but was becoming frustrated, limited, and overwhelmed. I was not the man with the answers, nor was I managing or leading a group of professionals. I was not using my God-given strengths of delegating, encouraging and leading. I was trying to cover the details and not allowing others to build their self worth. Once I realized that God had placed me in leadership because He had given me the strength and skills to lead and use others, my stress level dropped and productivity soared.
Now when I feel overwhelmed, frustrated or limited because of a situation, I will ask myself, "Am I serving tables when I should be preaching God's Word?"--so to speak. Am I stifling a Stephen in my life because I'm serving tables? Thank you, Lord, for drawing me to verse 2. It has opened my eyes to see that you have given me the strengths I need to follow the plan you have for my life.
