Central Truth
The motivation of Paul and those with him was to share the gospel because they cared for those in Thessalonica, not because they had to or so they would be praised. Not only did they share the gospel, but they shared their lives too.
Reflections
This verse reminds me of a time when we lived in Arizona. Our church was near Tempe, a small city centered around Arizona State University. Its downtown had that typical college feel with interesting shops, restaurants and clubs. In it you would find a wide array of people and cultures. One group was made up of teenagers and young adults who spent most of their time there. You've seen them-- they dress differently, talk differently and to some, even look scary.
One day I was invited to go downtown to hand out Bible tracts and preach the gospel to anyone who would listen. While a bit frightening at first, I found that I really enjoyed meeting people and talking about Jesus. I continued to go back there on the weekends and was drawn to this crowd of young people. They were the most skeptical of all but the most passionate too. Over time several of us got to know them better and found ways to help them. Most of them were homeless, going from place to place living out of their backpacks. When they shared, it was often on the surface because they feared being turned in. Usually they used "street" names they made up for themselves. We continued to be kind and tried to meet their practical needs.
I knew we were on the right track when a new kid complained about us "Jesus" people and wanted us to leave. Another commented and said "No, they are OK, they are from that Calvary church." You see, there were several churches using many different methods to reach people with the gospel. These kids and young adults said they knew who was real and who really cared, and they ignored the others. Over time we were able to lead many to Christ. Some went back to their homes and one young girl even decided to carry her baby to term; one of the members of our church adopted her beautiful child!
The point is, love first, because people know who is real.
Discussion Questions
- Try to remember times when you shared the gospel and how it was received. Were there times you thought some individuals really "heard" you beter than others? What was difference?
- How important do you think it is to get to know someone before you can effectively share the gospel?
- Do you think it makes a difference to try and help meet people's needs before sharing what you have to say about Jesus?
- Is there someone specifically you have been trying to tell about Jesus and they just don't seem to hear you? Would getting to know them more deeply and caring for them make a difference?
Meditate on the approach of our Lord Jesus. He got to know people. He fed them. He healed them. For many, that's when they heard Him. He first loved us!
