JESUS, KING OF KINGS, LORD OF LORDS
- Key Verse
- Now therefore, O kings, show discernment;
Take warning, O judges of the earth.
Worship the LORD with reverence
And rejoice with trembling.
Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way,
For His wrath may soon be kindled.
How blessed are all who take refuge in Him! (Psalm 2:10-12)

Central Truth
The sinful nature of man gives rise to individuals and leaders who thrive on personal power, pride, materialism and lust for anything they don't possess. However, the God of the universe, who created the earth and who has known these kings and kingdoms since creation, promises their destruction.
Reflections
We can't watch the nightly news without seeing the script of Psalm 2 enacted in our modern world. The sinful nature of man is the same today as it was when this psalm was written by King David more than 3000 years ago. So why are the nations in an uproar? And why do people waste their time with futile plans? The psalmist states that the kings and rulers of our world plot together against God and His royal Son, Jesus. Fallen leaders and individuals in our culture seek to "set people free" from God's commands by encouraging them to rule over their own lives and live as they please without guilt.
Psalm 2 says God watches mankind's vain attempt to rule and laughs. Then God proclaims He will give rule of the kingdoms and ends of the earth to His Son, who will shatter the ungodly with a rod of iron. However, all who worship the Lord with reverence and rejoice with Him will take refuge from His wrath and will be blessed!
As Christians, we already have the blessed assurance of eternal life with our Heavenly Father. My question is: WILL YOU AND I FINISH WELL as Christians in a fallen world that rejects our Lord and our faith? Are we willing to demonstrate our faith by resisting the temptation to "rule" over situations and areas of our lives, and surrender all to God's will in these areas? Our answer should be a resounding "YES" to trust God with everything we have and know.
In my simple faith and humble opinion, I believe God originally intended mankind to supervise the earth under submission to His divine authority. When Adam sinned, mankind lost this privilege. THEN GOD SENT JESUS! Under submission to His Heavenly Father, Jesus demonstrated the supernatural on earth, and allowed us to see the divine order God originally intended. We, too, can overcome the world by allowing God to rule our lives through the Holy Spirit. We know the way to eternal life with our creator, and we should want to share this good news with unbelievers!
Discussion Questions
Meditate on a situation or life event where you surrendered control to God. Recall how the Holy Spirit enabled you to overcome fear of loss and control as you waited for answers and divine direction from God.
- What was the final outcome of this victory?
- Is this experience one that you could share as a testimony to others of God's love and care for you?
- If so, pray for an opportunity to share it with someone who needs to hear your good news.
