DO WE SING OR JUST SING ALONG?

Who seek Your face . . . .

Central Truth
God wants our sincere worship - worship that isn't just going through the motions, but is from the heart. He delights when we seek Him with our hearts, our minds, our emotions, our wills, and our bodies. He calls us to be a generation that seeks Him passionately.
Reflections
How fortunate we are that our generation is living in a time when God is again anointing His people to write worship songs that are beautiful, full of rich harmonies, based on solid theology, and drawing us into true worship,"[T]hat the King of glory may come in!
Who is this King of glory?
The LORD of hosts,
He is the King of glory.
Selah.'" (Vs 9b, 10.)
"Selah" is a word that is found many times in the book of Psalms. As "Amen" is saying, "Yes!" to what has been stated, so Selah is an instruction telling us that we should weigh and reflect on what has been said. The Amplified Bible interprets Selah as "pause, and think of that."
In verse 6, David cries out, "This is the generation that is seeking him!" In other words, David says, "We are looking for the Messiah, we are searching Him out, our eyes are open. Lord, reveal Him to us!" It is not just the heart song of David, but it is the song of the people as well.
This reminds us that worship songs are meant to not only be sung by the congregation, but the lyrics, as we sing them, are to become our own words. How often do we gather on Sunday mornings, sing a few praise and worship songs, listen to our pastor's teaching, and then go on with our day? How easy it is for our minds to move on to what we are anticipating in the week ahead. How often, when we bow for prayer, do our minds wander and we are no longer praying but daydreaming? How often do we sing the words of the songs, but as we do, we are only singing along and never making those words become our own? David reminds us that as we lift our voices together to sing God's praise, we are proclaiming these words to be our own. Are we the generation that seeks the Messiah? Pause, and think of that!
Discussion Questions
- Do you come on Sundays prepared to worship, or to just sing along?
- Do you sing to God in your private worship time?
- Try looking up the lyrics to some of your favorite worship songs, then read and say them without singing. Pause, and think of that!

It's been said there is a difference between hearing and listening. I hear you saying there is a difference between participating and deliberately focusing on worship and praise. Good devo.

Yes, even if singing well is not my gift, the words my songs of worship to the Lord should become my own personal proclamation of His greatness. Selah!
